Croaker continues to add to the Annals of the Black Company in this second book of the first trilogy. My hunch was right. The Black company will be forced to decide if keeping its oaths to the Lady is a good idea; it was what forces them to choose that I was surprised by. (No, I am not telling!) As I think back on what I read in those few 300+ pages, I stand amazed. So much happens, so many things change, the action is so relentless, only I never noticed! It all flowed along that perfectly.
Fantasy Series Book Review by Mulluane
There is alot of running and fighting and running and fighting in this installment. The war continues and this time the odds seem to be favoring the Lady. There is only one problem, her husband, who by all accounts is more evil then she is, is reaching out from his grave again. (Some guys just refuse to stay dead!) Therefore, her elite troops, the tenacious and highly successful Black Company, are called in. Across the continent they go - again - right into the path of Raven and Darling who think they are safe. Raven has been trying to come up with vast sums of money so he and Darling can escape to the south. Croaker and his friends must not only root out the trouble originating from the Dominator's grave, but also protect Raven who is unknowingly up to his neck right in the middle of it! Fun stuff.
Good fast read, plenty of dark moments, some interesting monsters, some great worldbuilding and I cannot say enough good things (or bad) about the characters. Same refreshing change as book one, maybe even better in some respects. The characters felt a bit more developed to me this time and they were pretty darn good the first time! Adult content without a doubt. Plenty of violence, dark magic, murder, and betrayal. There is also humor, brotherhood, and loyalty. This series so far has met and exceeded my expectations. I think I will get to see more about Darling and her role as the second coming of the White Rose in book three. I am looking forward to it.
