Warlord (Hyrthun Chronicles: Wolfblade Trilogy: Book 3)

Marla Wolfblade is reeling from the loss of her closest confidant, Elizaar the Fool, who taught her the Rules of Gaining and Wielding Power, and helped shape her into a force in Hythria. But Marla's plans for revenge are disrupted when she discovers she has a dangerous adversary....

On the border, Fardohnya has massed its troops for an invasion, and Marla's eldest son, Damin Wolfblade, heir to the throne of Hythria, finds his ability to fight back is thwarted by tradition, politics, and the foolishness of the High Prince...

Back in Krakandar, Mahkas Damaran awaits news of the battle and has sealed the city against Damin's return. With the city on the brink of starvation, it seems only theft on an unprecedented scale can free Krakandar from Mahkas's madness and tyranny... and destroy Hythria's web of secrets and lies.

Warlord (Hythrun Chronicles: Wolfblade Trilogy, #3)

♥ Mini Review ♥
Jennifer Fallon does it again as she wraps up the Wolfblade Trilogy in a very satisfying way. There is only one problem, now I want to go back and reread the Demon Child Trilogy! Damin turns out to be everything you could hope for in a hero, Marla unsheathes her claws and gets down and dirty while everything falls nicely in line for the events in the Demon Child Trilogy. As usual, I was blown away.

Fantasy Book Review by Mulluane

For the life of me, I cannot understand the lack of reviews on this book, eight on Amazon, and only two on LibraryThing? People! If you have not read this series, you are missing a great fantasy read!

I love three things about Jennifer Fallon's writing. First is her characters, they waltz right into your mind and take over. Secondly is her political savvy. If Jennifer Fallon ever runs for a political office, we are all in deep trouble. Thirdly is the easy way she writes humor into her stories. Not only does it feel natural but also at times, it is flat out hilarious. All of this combines to provide the reader with true immersion. This book got me through a snowstorm, no power, no water, no phone, and a tooth extraction with my sanity intact! Does it get any better then that?

The writing in this book was a bit tighter, if that is even possible. Alot needs to take place to conclude all the plot points and it does so beautifully. There is more focus and the timeline is narrowed considerably so the pacing is flawless. Better yet, the pacing flows naturally, and unlike some final books in a trilogy, it does not seem rushed.

There is less character development. The characters do not really "grow" so much as reveal the true scope of their personalities. There is more swordplay and military strategy but the main focus remains on the politics of war more so then the actual fighting of it. Despite Jennifer Fallon's clever use of humor, this is not a light read. Insanity, depravity, infidelity, murder, and tragedy comprise a large portion of this story. However, she balances this with humor, love, loyalty, and heroics, all in good measure. All in all, a very well rounded book.

I highly recommend this novel, and this series, to anyone who loves character driven fantasy with a large dose of backstabbing politics, dry wit, and personal triumphs. Jennifer Fallon has not disappointed me yet!
