The good, the bad and the really confused.
The Good. Book three was everything book one was only better. This one was much more of a page turner. Bryen, Fyn and Piro all had more or less equally important roles and the POV switched smoothly between the three. There was much less time spent on feeling sorry for themselves and alot more moving forward with a purpose. Tension mounted as the story built to a rousing crescendo of an ending. I admit it, I saw dawn break the night I finished this book.
The Bad. With about one hundred pages left I knew there was a serious problem. I knew with absolute certainly the story was not going to finish, or even be close to finished. Unfortunately, I was right. While part of the story was resolved, the book ended in yet another cliffhanger. I was honestly pretty ticked off. I do not expect a trilogy to end that way. It defeats the whole purpose of me buying the entire trilogy in the first place.
The Confused. I went hunting for info. Was I wrong? Was this not a trilogy? What I found only left me scratching my head. In September a 4th book will be released. Note, it has been 3 years since the release of The Usurper and the author has written and released an entirely separate trilogy in the meantime. Adding to my confusion is description of book four. The new book, titled King Breaker, says very clearly on its Amazon preorder page "The conclusion to the hugely popular King Rolen's Kin series!". And yet, all my other digging clearly said the first three books were definitely a trilogy. Perplexed I dug deeper.
On the author's website, she states in comments, multiple times, she is in the process of writing a second trilogy.
So is the 4th book "The conclusion to the hugely popular King Rolen's Kin series!" or are there going to be 2 more books and the second trilogy is actually the conclusion. I honestly do not know. In my opinion if it is another complete trilogy, the description (which I might add is also printed across the top of the new book cover) is a tad misleading. My advice? If you are like me and you want to wait until the entire story is in print, hold off on this series. It is far from done.
My Conclusion: If you don't mind waiting however long it takes to actually conclude this tale, this is a fun trilogy to read. Plenty of twists and turns, sympathetic characters, lots of action and you get to enjoy watching as the characters grow and mature. My only regret is that I have to wait to see how everything works out.
