A Fantasy Series Book Review
By Dawn Cook
Genre: Fantasy Series, 13+
ISBN: 044100945X
Publisher: Ace (May 28, 2002)
Paperback, 352 pages
Alissa didn't believe in magic, not until she was sent on a journey to an endangered fortress known as The Hold—and discovered the gifts within herself to save it.This book combines several elements integral to a good fantasy story. Coming of age, quest of discovery, a mystery to solve, a villain to hate, a loyal companion and fierce protector in the form of a kestrel. And did I mention dragons?!? This is not a large book (336 pages) but still manages to pack alot of story within its pages.
The world building is excellent, the characters are vividly portrayed and very believable. Alissa comes across beautifully as exactly what she is, a naive young woman who has a lot to learn, about herself, her father and the pitfalls involved in both pride and prejudice.
This is a cliffhanger type series of 4 books so I do recommend getting all 4 so you can enjoy the entire journey.
